Biography

Life of John Price

John was baptised at St Peter's Church in the town of Lampeter on the 29th of January 1798 [1].

Lampeter was a prominent market town, located on the banks of the River Telfi, that held as many as eight fairs per year. John was the son of David and his wife Margaret [12].

On the 28th of March 1787, John married Mary Walters at the All Saints Church in the nearby parish of Cellan [2].

John and Mary settled in Lampeter, where they welcomed their first child, Eleanor, on the 7th of December 1787. She was joined by three brothers - David in 1791, Thomas in 1794 and John in 1797 [3] [4] [5] [6].

In 1800, Mary gave birth to their fifth child, a daughter named Alse, who sadly only lived for a week. Her baptismal record confirms that, at the time, the family were living on the Peterwell demesne. Peterwell was a mansion located west of Lampeter. We know from the baptismal record of John's daughter, Alse, that the family lived on the "Peterwell demesne", meaning on the land attached to the manor [7].

By 1834 (and likely much earlier), the family further west and settled at Fronbedr, a 60-acre farm [8] [13].

John's wife Mary died at Fronbedr in April 1834. By 1841, John had passed the operation of Fronbedr to his son, John junior and he was working as an agricultural labourer on the farm and living with his daughter Elinor [9] [14].

John died of old age at Fronbedr on the 8th of November 1847. Three days later he was buried at St Peter's Church in Lampeter [10] [11].
