Biography

Early years

We know from the 1851 census, that Anne was born in the parish of Bettws Bledrws, near Lampeter, in Cardiganshire, around 1792 [1. Her birth in this parish is supported by her marriage at the parish church in Bettws Bledrws - it was traditional at the time to marry in the bride's home parish [5]

Bettws Bledrws was a small village - only around 200 inhabitants - located on the road to Tregaron [14]. The parish church was dedicated to St Bledrws. The church register â€‹does not record any baptisms between 1786-1793, although it is unlikely there were no baptisms at all during that period, as all other years reliably had at least 2-3 baptisms - this gap in the register just at the time Anne was born makes it difficult to ascertain her parentage.

However, the only Jones family having children in Bettws Bledrws around this time was Thomas Jones, a farmer and churchwarden, and his wife Jane. Norma Margaret Oliver has a DNA link to a descendant of Thomas Jones through his second wife, Elizabeth, supporting that Anne was the daughter of Thomas. The timing of her birth meant her mother was Thomas' first wife, Jane Morgan [2].

The Jones family lived at Llwyn-bobby,"baking bush", a forested area north of Bettws Bledrws. In 1801, Anne's mother Jane died. Thomas re-married later that year to Elizabeth Jones and, by 1804, the family had moved to the farm east of Llwyn-bobby, called Maes-y-felin-fach,"the small mill field" [3] [4]. â€‹â€‹

Marriage and life in Pentrebach

At the age of about 24, on the 1st of March 1816, a very heavily pregnant Anne married David Price in her parish church of St Bledrws [5]. Immediately after their marriage, the couple moved to David's home at Pentrebach "small village", about 5 miles south-west of Bettws Bledrws, in the parish of Lampeter. It was there, in the farmhouse at Dolaugwyrddon-uchaf, "the high green meadow", that she gave birth to their eldest son, John, who was baptised on the 14th of April 1816 [6].

In those early days, David farmed and laboured at Dolaugwyrddon-uchaf. The family lived there for at least four years, having another child - a son David - in 1822 [7a and 7b]

In 1825, Anne and David lived at Cwmman, a hamlet south-east of Lampeter, just across the River Telfi but, by 1830, they had returned back to Pentrebach [8a and 8b] [9a and 9b].

David farmed at Pentrebach and we know from the 1851 census that the farm was 18 acres [10 [11]It was an important place to the family, so much so that David's great-great-granddaughter was able to recall the name over 150 years later in the 1990s (although, by that time, her memory had corrupted it slightly to "Penprybach") [15].

Death of Anne

Anne passed away at Pentrebach on the 25th of February 1861. She was recorded as being 70 years of age at the time of her death, and the cause of death was given as old age [12].

She was buried two days later, at St Peter's Church in Lampeter [13].
